Kelly was named captain of the Marquette freshman squad, but had to quit school and undergo a bone operation on his foot during his sophomore year.  He returned to Marquette as a sophomore in September of 1937 and played on the varsity team, before transferring to [[DePaul]].

"I liked it up at Marquette, but that foot injury jinxed me up there and that led me to making my decision to attend a school near my home," said Kelly.
