After participating in the NCAA Slam Dunk competition (placed 3rd) and the Reese's College Senior All-Star Game (scored 23 points and made 5 three-pointers) that preceded the Final Four, Lazar decided not to take part in the 2010 Portsmouth Invitational. He was to be a member of the Roger Brown's team.

The two most impressive numbers for NBA scouts were Lazar's wingspan (one of only two sub-6'5" players with a seven-foot wingspan), his 36 inch vert (tied for 17th overall), as well as his agility drill time of 10.87 seconds, which was second to the soon-to-be #1 overall pick John Wall's 10.84 seconds.

Lazar had workouts with thirteen NBA teams: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis, Miami, Milwaukee, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oklahoma City, San Antonio (twice), and Utah.

Lazar was selected with the 30th pick of the First Round of the 2010 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards. But on draft day, the Minnesota Timberwolves acquired the draft rights to Lazar and Serbian forward Nemanja Bjelica, the 35th overall pick, from the Wizards in exchange for the draft rights to Clemson forward Trevor Booker, the 23rd overall pick, and Hamady N'diaye, the 56th overall pick.

//"The Wizards ended the first round the way they began it: with a terrific pick of a high-character winner. Hayward is a dicey proposition from a position standpoint. He was a power forward throughout his college career, but he can shoot, plays aggressively and finds a way to make an impact."//
His guaranteed contract as a first round pick means that he will join Travis Diener (2005), Steve Novak (2006) and Wesley Matthews (2009) as the 4th player since 2005 to play all four years at Marquette and then go straight to the NBA. In an era of one-and-dones, Marquette is the only school that can make that claim.
Also, he is the most recent first-rounder from Marquette since Dwyane Wade (5th, 2003).

During the 2011-12 season, Hayward was assigned to the Thunder's NBADL affiliate, Tulsa 66ers, where he was briefly teamed with fellow Marquette alum, [[Dwight Buycks]]. (Unfortunately, Buycks was sidelined with an ankle injury at the time.) For the three days he was assigned to Tulsa, Hayward saw action in two games averaging 36.0 mpg, 28.0 ppg, and 7.0 rpg.

Lazar joined the Thunder as they roared into the NBA playoffs. He appeared in one game versus the Dallas Mavericks, two games versus the Los Angeles Lakers and then one game versus the San Antonio Spurs. As a member of Oklahoma City's 2012 NBA Finals roster, he logged about 5 minutes in a loss to Miami in the deciding game 5.
