Van Vooren was Moline's top player on the squad that finished runners-up in 1951. That year was the Moline Maroons' best finish in school history in the Illinois High School State Boys Basketball Tournament. Van Vooren scored 64 points in 4 games, with his best effort - 27 points - in a semifinal victory over Quincy. In the following title game, he tallied 12 points as Moline lost to Freeport.
