Kelly was named captain of the Marquette freshman squad, but had to quit school and undergo a bone operation on his foot during his sophomore year. He returned to Marquette as a sophomore in September of 1937 and played on the varsity team, before transferring to DePaul.

“I liked it up at Marquette, but that foot injury jinxed me up there and that led me to making my decision to attend a school near my home,” said Kelly.
