MILWAUKEE (AP) – Travis Diener scored 16 points and Steve Novak added 14 as Marquette improved to 11-1 for the first time in 26 years with a 65-55 victory over Coppin State on Wednesday night.
Marquette was last 11-1 during the 1978-79 season when it finished 22-7 and its nickname was still the Warriors, before the change to Golden Eagles.
Coppin State (2-9) was led by Nicholas King with 16 points and Darryl Proctor with 14.
Marquette took the lead for good, 17-15, on Diener's layup with 8:55 to go. The basket sparked an 11-0 run that allowed the Golden Eagles to lead 29-21 at halftime.
In the second half, Marquette opened a 48-30 lead with 9:58 left, and Coppin State could get no closer until the final seconds of the game. The Eagles came within 61-54 on Proctor's two free throws with 1:06 left.
Niv Berkowitz then made two free throws as Marquette opened a 63-54 lead.
Coppin State, which tied for first in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference last year, has lost to basketball powerhouses Kentucky, Utah, Texas, Oklahoma and Pittsburgh this season and had lost its previous three games by an average 28 points.
The Eagles – 0-11 all-time against Conference USA teams – have lost four consecutive games and play at Minnesota New Year's Day before beginning the conference portion of their schedule.
Marquette made 9-of-14 shots in the second half while Coppin State made only 8 - of - 29.
Novak, a 6-foot-9 junior, made 3-of-9 3-pointers and has made at least one 3-pointer in 28 consecutive games.
