As a senior at Milwaukee Pius, Johnson averaged 19.6 points and 11.5 rebound per game and led his team to 2nd place in the state private schools' tournament.

He was a unanimous All-Catholic Conference selection by coaches and even received some prep All-American mention.

=== 1971-72 Season (Frosh Team) ===
Johnson was a starter on the 1971-72 freshman team and averaged 9.3 ppg and 6.3 rpg. That season, he had a season high of 25 points against Olive-Harvey.

[[Hank Raymonds]], coach of the Freshman Team, said the following about Johnson: "Very quick, and jumps well. At this stage defense is his best asset. He's having a hard time adjusting to pattern basketball, but will be a strong offensive player when he does."
