Detinger transferred from UW-Milwaukee, when it was still known as Milwaukee State Teacher's College. He averaged 3.7 points per game during the 1941-42 season. Detinger also threw the shot put for Marquette, but was declared ineligible just prior to the start of the 1942 indoor season
