He wasn't playing much going into his senior season and knew that he wanted to go to medical school so he really wanted to devote his time to his studies. He told Al, his coach at the time, that he was leaving the team to focus on school in preparation for medical school and his future as a doctor. Al told him that not only was that fine with him, but he kept him on scholarship his senior year so he wouldn't be hit with tuition once he left the team.
