Starred at Racine's St. Catherine's H.S. with future Marquette teammate Rocke Calvelli. Earned All-City and All-Conference honors twice, was named to the Catholic All-State team as a senior, and twice was picked on the National Catholic All-Star team at Washington, D.C.

As a freshman, Poulsen was the fourth-leading scorer with 135 points for a 10.4 average.

As a sophomore, he scored 52 points in 21 games for a 2.4 average. Scored a then-collegiate high of 14 points against Creighton.

During his junior year, he finished as the ninth-highest scorer with 34 points in 20 games for a 1.7 average. Had the second-highest FT% on the team, hitting 28 of 23 for 78.3%. His best effort was eight points against Detroit. Has quick hands, good speed, is a steady defensive player and works well in the fast break.
