-===== Preview =====+===== Golden Eagles Coast In Opener, But There's Work To Do =====
+Playing improved defense is one of the top priorities of the Marquette University men's basketball team.
 +
+Coach Buzz Williams made that clear early on when he stated that his starting five would consist of the players who would give the team its best defensive presence, and tightening the screws defensively has been an over-riding theme of the preseason workouts.
 +
+The Golden Eagles opened their season by routing Mount St. Mary's, 91-37, Friday night at the Bradley Center and fans got a first glimpse of the team that hopes to improve on last season's records of 22-15 overall and 9-9 in the Big East Conference.
 +
+Senior Darius Johnson-Odom led Marquette with 16 points, while Jae Crowder and Chris Otule added 14 points each.
 +
+Mount St. Mary's shot 29.1% and committed 29 turnovers, but Williams was not pleased about its 16 offensive rebounds.
 +
+"I thought we played OK at times," said Williams. "But giving up 16 offensive rebounds is not very good at all. Defensively, from a priority standpoint where we spent most of our time, I thought in a lot of ways some of that came to life.
 +
+"To force a team into 29 turnovers and to hold them to the field-goal percentage that we did, all of those things are very positive. Ten times tonight we had three consecutive stops, which is what we call turkeys. If you hit seven you probably win and we had 10."
 +
+Said Otule, "We were up and down. I think there were times when we relaxed a little bit. There were times when we got turkeys. . . we got seven turkeys in the first half but then we relaxed a little bit and we had three in the second half, so we didn't play with the same amount of energy all the time."
 +
+Last season, the Golden Eagles gave up 70.7 points per game on 45.6% shooting in Big East games and ranked a lowly 14th in the league in both categories.
 +
+The players are talking as if there is a more determined approach mentally toward defense, and that includes rebounding.
 +
+"I think there's a different mind-set that we have this year," said Crowder. "We're starting to put a game together where we want to get consecutive stops. As many consecutive stops as possible. But with that being said, you have to finish the possession with the rebound.
 +
+"The one game that I keep replaying when I hear that is Wisconsin last year here. We didn't finish possessions but we still had a chance to win the game. So when we have that different mind-set and that different mentality as a team, good things will happen on the floor."
 +
+Said Johnson-Odom, "You're going to see a bunch of kids that are hard working on the defensive end. Very talkative and a lot of energy. Something we're really focusing on in practice. A lot of guys have improved (defensively)."
 +
+Marquette dominated the first half and led Mount St. Mary's at halftime, 49-18.
 +
+Mount St. Mary's shot 26.9% and had 18 turnovers at halftime. Crowder scored 14 points and Johnson-Odom had 11 for Marquette, which shot 51.4%.
 +
+Marquette held first-half leads of 31-9 and 49-16 and the carnage continued in the second half.
