-===== Marquette Bitten By The Zone =====
-Getting out to a lead on the road hasn't been a problem lately for the Marquette Golden Eagles.
-
-Holding one, though, is a different story.
-
-On Saturday night, it was [[Notre Dame]]'s switch to a zone defense early in the second half that did them in. Unable to carry over their hot shooting from the opening 20 minutes or shut down Irish guard Ben Hansbrough on the other end, the Golden Eagles wound up falling, 80-75, in front of a crowd of 9,149 at Purcell Pavilion.
-
-Hansbrough pumped in a career-high 28 points on 10-for-15 shooting to help No. 16 Notre Dame avenge an embarrassing 79-57 loss at the Bradley Center on Jan. 10.
-
-His incredible fall-away three-pointer with the shot clock winding down and then a tomahawk baseline dunk capped a 22-6 run that turned an 11-point MU lead at the 17:49 mark of the second half into a 62-57 [[Notre Dame]] lead.
-
-The Golden Eagles never recovered and for the second straight game fell after holding a double-digit lead in the second half. Granted, it wasn't near the collapse they turned in at [[Louisville]] last weekend, when they frittered away an 18-point advantage in the final 5:44. But it was painful enough.
-
-"First off, we have to learn how to finish," said [[Jimmy Butler]], who scored nine of his 12 points in the first 6:16. "Come out in the second half the way that we come out in the first half. We have to play 40 full minutes in a basketball game in order to come out on top.
-
-"We've got to stop relying on our offense so much and guard on the defensive end, and I think everything will start to turn around if we do those things."
-
-[[Darius Johnson-Odom]] scored 25 points to pace four players in double figures for MU (13-7 overall, 4-3 [[Big East]]), which hit just 9 of 20 shots (30.0%) in the second half, was out-rebounded by seven and was killed by [[Notre Dame]]'s 13 extra makes at the free-throw line.
-
-MU, which hit 12 of 17 three-pointers in the drubbing of [[Notre Dame]] earlier this month, knocked down 5 of 7 in the first half and shot 61.5% overall (16 for 26) in jumping out to a 45-36 halftime lead.
-
-Johnson-Odom had 15 points and [[Jae Crowder]] 10 and six rebounds as the Golden Eagles played their second straight superb first half of basketball on the road.
-
-Three-pointers by [[Dwight Buycks]] and then Crowder out of the locker room stretched MU's lead to 51-40 with 17:49 left.
-
-But instead of folding as they did in Milwaukee, the Irish (16-4, 5-3) responded.
-
-Starting with a Tim Abromaitis drive and ending with a pair of Hansbrough free throws, they went on a 13-2 run to knot the score at 53-53 by the 14:20 mark. They didn't stop there, either, putting together a 9-4 run over the next 5½ minutes.
-
-That one was punctuated by Hansbrough, who first hit a three-pointer as he fell out of bounds in the right corner with the shot clock winding down, and then slammed home a one-handed tomahawk dunk on a baseline drive. That capped the Irish run at 22-6 and gave them a 62-57 lead with 8:51 left.
-
-"We got very stagnant as a team," Butler said. "We settled for a lot of jumpers. I think a lot of it has to do with myself because I wasn't playing aggressive, I wasn't attacking. I started passing the ball on the perimeter, not getting into the gaps. And when (my teammates) see that, they do the same.
-
-"We settled for jump shots at the end of too many possessions."
-
-With the crowd now thoroughly into the game, the Golden Eagles fought an uphill battle the rest of the way.
-
-Already rattled by the zone [[Notre Dame]] began employing in the second half, they could put together no consistent offense while fouling too often on the other end.
-
-MU got to within 68-64 on a pair of Johnson-Odom free throws with 4:27 left, but Crowder fouled out less than a minute later, robbing the Golden Eagles of one of their biggest weapons.
-
-From there, [[Notre Dame]] hit 11 of 12 free throws to keep its distance from MU. The Golden Eagles got a pair of threes in the final 15 seconds to make the score a bit more respectable.
-
-"Just win, you know?" coach [[Buzz Williams]] said when asked what his team needed to do to pull out a game on the road. "I wish there was more of a scientific approach to it.
-
-"I don't think that you can win when the clock is stopped for 22 free-throw attempts (in the second half). Then, eight offensive rebounds adds to it."
-
-Things don't get any easier for the Golden Eagles, as they return home to host a pair of top 10 teams in [[Connecticut]] and [[Syracuse]] this week.
