-===== Preview  =====+===== Golden Eagles Deliver vs. South Dakota With a Banged-Up Job =====
+There's never a good time for injuries.
 +
+But two days out from their matchup with No. 1-ranked Duke, that's the reality of the situation for the Marquette Golden Eagles, who defeated South Dakota, 82-69, without two frontcourt contributors on Saturday afternoon at the Bradley Center.
 +
+It was revealed prior to the game that senior forward Joseph Fulce would be out for at least a couple of weeks with a left-knee injury, and then at the 12-minute 12-second mark of the first half, freshman forward Davante Gardner checked out for good after sustaining a left-shoulder injury.
 +
+Afterward, coach Buzz Williams didn't have any updates on the condition of Gardner, who had an ice pack on the shoulder on the bench. He did, however, cast Fulce's injury in a much more serious light. Fulce has undergone multiple surgeries on his right knee since arriving at MU in 2008.
 +
+Those operations were to help alleviate problems with the patella in Fulce's right knee. Williams said an MRI showed Fulce now has "zero" cartilage in his left knee.
 +
+"It was drained; he took a shot. We'll see if the enzyme in the shot helps him. But I don't know," Williams said. "I'm not as confident as the doctors are on when he'll be able to play. It's a different set of problems with his knee than it was the first time, but that kind of speaks to his knee problems."
 +
+While Fulce's loss isn't huge on the surface - he was averaging 3.3 points and 3.7 rebounds in the first three games - he was another athlete who could play a number of positions. And if Gardner is out for any length of time, it will rob the Golden Eagles of their most dependable low-block scorer to this point.
 +
+Entering Saturday, Gardner was second on the team in scoring at 13.0 points per game and shooting a robust 73.7% from the floor.
 +
+Senior forward Jimmy Butler, who had game highs of 20 points and nine rebounds for MU (4-0) and sophomore center Chris Otule, who had career highs of 15 and eight, will have to step up their games even more, along with Jae Crowder, Erik Williams and Jamail Jones - all either newcomers or seldom-used returnees.
 +
+"It helps," the coach said of his team's increased depth this season. "But I want our supposed depth to be able to execute. Otherwise it's bad depth, you know what I mean?"
 +
+Darius Johnson-Odom added 14 points and Dwight Buycks 11 points and seven rebounds against South Dakota (1-2).
 +
+MU used a 28-14 advantage on the boards and a shutout on the free-throw line in the opening 20 minutes by South Dakota - the Coyotes were 0 for 2 compared with 14 for 21 for the Golden Eagles - to take a 43-29 halftime lead.
 +
+The play of the game came at the 10:51 mark when Johnson-Odom, streaking down the left side, fired a behind-the-back pass to Butler, who filled the lane on the right side and threw down a nasty two-handed jam in the face of 6-foot-8 Ricardo Andreotti.
 +
+The Golden Eagles led by as many as 23 points midway through the second half but played sloppy enough down the stretch to allow South Dakota to pull to within nine after Milwaukee Riverside product Charlie Westbrook hammered down a one-handed dunk on the break.
 +
+Williams called a timeout to regroup, and Buycks responded with a pair of baskets to help give the Golden Eagles some breathing room the rest of the way. Still, Williams was less than pleased afterward.
 +
+"I thought we were average at best," Williams said. "I thought it was by far our worst performance of the year. Disappointed as a group, disappointed in them individually."
 +
+MU left after the game for Kansas City and will face Duke, the defending national champion, at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the semifinals of the CBE Classic at the Sprint Center. No. 3 Kansas State and No. 11 Gonzaga play in the other semifinal, with the winners and losers to face off on Tuesday.
