+===== Freshman Steps Up As UConn Slips Past Marquette =====
 +
+The Marquette Golden Eagles succeeded in slowing down national player of the year favorite Kemba Walker on Tuesday night, holding him to a season-low 14 points.
 +
 +It made no difference.
 +
+Walker's freshman backcourt mate Jeremy Lamb picked up the slack with a career-high 24, and No. 5 Connecticut held Marquette without a field goal for more than 9 minutes down the stretch in the second half to notch a 76-68 win at the Bradley Center.
 +
+The Huskies trailed, 56-51, with 11 minutes 24 seconds remaining but turned the game completely around with a 17-4 run featuring Lamb and Walker on the offensive end and a stifling defensive performance that limited the Golden Eagles to just four free throws over that stretch.
 +
+Walker finished 5 for 16 from the field in 39 minutes and missed all five of his three-pointers but still found a way to make a difference by dishing out a game-high nine assists. He grabbed six rebounds and added two steals for UConn (17-2, 5-2 Big East).
 +
+"Kemba, he's a really good player," said Jimmy Butler, who became the 42nd player to score 1,000 points at MU with a team-high 21. "I think he had 14 points, but he also had nine assists which led to buckets. He can do a lot of different things for his team, but you've got to worry about all the counterparts and tonight Lamb had a career night.
 +
+"That really can't happen. We've just got to guard, period."
 +
+The 6-foot-5 Lamb hit 9 of 14 shots including 3 of 4 three-pointers as he bested his previous high of 16 points. Roscoe Smith added 11 points and eight rebounds. UConn won on the boards, 39-34, despite leading rebounder Alex Oriakhi being a non-factor in 21 minutes due to foul trouble.
 +
+"We did a really poor job on (Lamb)," coach Buzz Williams said. "They can't just switch, you know what I mean? We just did a really poor job of playing him, but I thought we did a really good job of playing Kemba."
 +
+Darius Johnson-Odom added 18 points, Dwight Buycks 13 and Jae Crowder 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Golden Eagles (13-8, 4-4).
 +
+UConn led, 38-31, at halftime, but MU used a 13-3 run midway through the second half - sparked by seven points from Butler - to regain the lead at 56-51.
 +
+MU had success posting Butler up repeatedly, leaving him to either score in the post or be fouled. It was at that point that UConn adjusted defensively.
 +
+"I told Roscoe to front him, that I didn't want him touching the ball in the post," said Huskies Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun. "We started switching everything, and that worked pretty well."
 +
+Butler's basket at the 11:24 mark wound up being the Golden Eagles' last until Johnson-Odom scored on a layup with 1:47 left. In the meantime, the Huskies got six points from Walker, five from Shabazz Napier and four from Lamb to spark UConn's 17-4 run and put the game out of reach.
 +
+The Golden Eagles wound up missing seven straight shots and turning the ball over three times in that stretch. Conversely, the Huskies scored on seven consecutive possessions and eight of nine.
 +
+"It seemed when Marquette got down, they kind of hurried to catch back up with us," Calhoun said. "I think when they got up they thought maybe this might be it. They withstood our runs, got a lead and so on. And all of a sudden they get down again, they hurry up, we slowed down and ran our stuff and got good shots."
 +
+Such lapses - particularly defensively - have become commonplace for the Golden Eagles as they've lost three of their last four. They next host No. 9 Syracuse on Saturday.
 +
+"We say that we learn from it, then we go out and do the exact same thing over and over again," Butler said. "Nobody wants to give up eight, 10 straight points, but we have to have a mentality of, 'I'm tired of my man scoring, and I'm not going to let my man score anymore.' "
