History

Marquette has both “Bleuteaux” and “Blueteaux” as spelling for the creature. Even the Marquette Tribune was never able to select a specific spelling. Bleuteaux was a blue “muppet like creature.” He served as Marquette's official mascot from 1984-1991. He was often seen wearing a blue and gold beret, and a simple Marquette basketball jersey, but that changed depending on the year and the sport.

The “First Warrior” suit is representative of the six Wisconsin woodland tribes (Chippewa, Menominee, Oneida, Winnebago, Stockbridge-Munsee and Potawatomi).

The American Indian Warrior was selected rather than a Spartan or Amazon warrior because the first inhabitants of the land in which Marquette is located were Indians, and secondly, because the name of the University was chosen to honor the memory of Father Jacques Marquette, S.J. During the 17th century, Father Marquette…

In the Spring of 2005, the Marquette Board of Trustees began to discuss the possibility of changing the Marquette athletic team name from Golden Eagle, back to its historic and beloved name of “Warriors”.

Upon researching the idea with local Indian tribes, the BoT came to the conclusion that even if the logo for

On May 2, 1994, Marquette announced that Golden Eagles had been chosen as the new athletic nickname after a vote that allegedly included students, faculty, administrators, staff and a “random sample” of alumni. Marquette's new athletic logo was unveiled on July 28, 1994 and although eagles are used by thousands of other schools and companies across the country and around the world, Marquette thought their logo would be unique and stand out amongst the countless other examples…
