MILWAUKEE The Marquette men's basketball team wrapped up its non-conference slate with an 88-40 victory of Lewis at the Bradley Center. Freshman Dominic James led all scorers with career high tying 22 points and freshman Wesley Matthews grabbed a career best 13 rebounds helping the Golden Eagles improve to 10-3 on the season, while the Flyers fall to 7-4.
“Our team built its confidence in the second half. We played great defense, especially in the second,” said head coach Tom Crean. “There were many positives in this game, including Wesley Matthews rebounding high, and Dominic's overall play with his 22 points and seven assists.”
Along with James, who also contributed five rebounds and a team high seven assists, three additional Golden Eagles scored in double figures. Senior Steve Novak tallied 14, and senior Joe Chapman and freshman Jerel McNeal each added 11 points. The Golden Eagles shot 52.2 percent for the game (36-of-69) while the Flyers made just 15 of their total 65 attempts (23.1 percent) and committed 19 turnovers.
Stephan Bolt led Lewis with nine points and 10 rebounds and John Loeffelholz contributed eight points and five rebounds.
Seven of Matthew's 13 rebounds came in the first half along with five assists. Collectively, the Golden Eagles out-rebounded the Flyers, 53-33.
“This is definitely a game that we wanted to come back after the break and be fresh,” said James. “We treated this game as a good preparation for our first BIG EAST game against UConn. Regardless of who we are playing next week, this was a good game to tonight helping up to improve our focus and overall execution. This game will definitely help us to prepare for what we have been looking forward to; UConn.”
Marquette held the Flyers to just 21 second half points while shooting over 63 percent in the second half.
“We had some good basketball from a lot of guys again tonight,” added Crean. “This team has been able to learn in every situation, and without question we did that tonight in the second half. You can' t get too high after a win or too low after a loss, but this is a great way to go into our inaugural season in the BIG EAST.”
Marquette will open BIG EAST Conference play when it hosts Connecticut in its first contest of the New Year on Tuesday, January 3 at 7 p.m. at the Bradley Center.
