Sexton Arena has been the home of Johnnie Basketball since December 1973. Located within the general athletics building known as the Warner Palaestra, Sexton Arena has seen its fair share of intense basketball action. A renovation of the Warner Palaestra in 1997 included a new wood floor and a dedication of the arena to SJU Alumni and basketball standout William D. Sexton ’55, whose gift made the renovation possible. In November 2008, Jim and Adrienne Smith Court was dedicated.
The 2009-10 season will be the 37th in Sexton Arena and the 107th of Saint John’s basketball. The Johnnies hold a 326-106 (.755) all-time record at Sexton Arena, and from 1978 to 1980, won 24 consecutive home games. In fact, Saint John’s has never lost to Saint Mary’s University in Sexton Arena (35-0). In the 36 years that the Johnnies have been playing in Sexton Arena, they have only had two losing seasons at home (2003-04 and 2004-2005).
The first game played in Sexton Arena occurred on December 9, 1973. The Johnnies took defeated crosstown rival St. Cloud State University, 67-58.
