+As is usually the case, the success of the Marquette Eagles began on the defensive end of the court Friday night.
+Sophomore guard [[Vander Blue]] scored a career-high 26 points and four of his teammates scored in double figures, but coach [[Buzz Williams]] pointed to his team's defense as the main reason for its 95-73 victory over Winthrop at the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands.
+"When our defense is what it was for the most part tonight, it trends toward our offense shooting good shots and making good shots," said Williams. "So I think a lot of what we do defensively impacts what we do offensively.
+"When they went on runs, it was because we were getting the ball out of the net and that has a negative affect on us offensively. So hopefully we can continue to score a bunch of points, but those points are a derivative of what we're doing defensively."
+Blue made seven of nine shots and 10 of 13 free throws. [[Darius Johnson-Odom]] added 20 points for the Golden Eagles (3-0). [[Todd Mayo]], [[Jae Crowder]] and [[Chris Otule]] scored 11 points each for Marquette, while [[Junior Cadougan]] handed out six assists.

+Early in the second half, Blue had made all seven of his shots but Winthrop was still within 11 so Blue said he hadn't been thinking about the fact that he hadn't missed a shot.
+"It was still a close game, so I'm like, 'If I shoot it, I'd better make it,' " said Blue. "So I wasn't thinking about my shooting percentage. I was just playing my game. I was in a groove, but I wanted to make sure that I did it within the system. I didn't want to go out of the system and try to get points that way. So I was just playing the game and let the game come to me."
+Johnson-Odom scored 13 points to lead Marquette to a 45-37 halftime lead, and a three-point basket by Johnson-Odom opened the second half. Blue then dropped in a pair of layups to give the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the game to that point, 52-38. Winthrop then scored six straight before Blue hit a jumper.
+A short time later, another layup by Blue made him 7 for 7 and opened a 14-0 run that blew the game open.
+Mayo followed Blue's score by sinking a three. Johnson-Odom then came up with a steal and a stuff, Mayo scored again from beyond the arc and Johnson-Odom hit a jumper to give Marquette a 68-47 lead with 9:58 left.
+"There was a segment in the middle of the first half, where we had 15 out of 16 possessions where we had stops," said Williams. "We got in a rhythm again in the middle of the second half which is why we went on a run because we were getting consecutive stops."
+Winthrop, hot from beyond the three-point arc, held a 16-15 lead, but Marquette ran off nine straight points.
+Marquette continued to pull away as a steal and slam dunk by Blue and two free throws and a layup by Johnson-Odom completed a 16-3 run and gave the Golden Eagles a 31-19 lead. A four-point play by Blue in the closing seconds gave Marquette its halftime lead.
