John Orsen

orsen_john.jpgJohn Orsen was named an assistant coach at Marquette University in May 2011.

“I am thrilled to announce the hiring of John Orsen as one of the first members of the Marquette men's lacrosse staff,” said Amplo. “John has overachieved in everything he has done. Entering college, he was a standout offensive player and throughout his career has played every position, earning All-American honors as a senior defender and becoming one of the best players at his position in the world today.”

The Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., native was a freshman during Amplo's first season as an assistant coach with the Pride. Orsen successfully transitioned from attack to defense while at Hofstra, garnering an STX/USILA Division I All-American honorable mention nod in his final season.

“I respect Joe Amplo a lot,” Orsen said of his former Hofstra coach. “He's a great coach and a great person. I've always had a passion for lacrosse and I think coaching was the next step. I like getting out there with the players, breaking down film and teaching them about the sport. Marquette University is a great school. It's in the BIG EAST. It's a premier conference to be in. You get everything from a great education to great competition on the field.

As a senior in 2006, he led Hofstra to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Lacrosse Championship, the furthest postseason run in program history. A captain in both his junior and senior seasons, Orsen was named to the 2006 All-Colonial Athletic Association First Team while leading the team to a 17-2 overall record.

He played in 57 games during his career, scoring 15 goals and tallying six assists.

Following his collegiate career, Orsen was selected in the fourth round, as the 40th overall pick, by the Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse. He was also drafted by the National Lacrosse League's (NLL) New York Titans in indoor play.

He currently plays for the Lizards in outdoor action, and now plays for the Boston Blazers of the NLL in indoor play.

In 2010, Orsen was one of 12 players named to the NLL All-Pro team after he anchored a defense that allowed the fewest goals in the league.

Orsen will also compete for Team USA in the 2011 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship in Prague, Czech Republic in May.

Orsen has spent the last two years as the business manager of Trilogy Lacrosse, which offers summer camps, coaching clinics and training sessions across the country.

At Trilogy Lacrosse, Orsen coordinates clinics and camps while managing team, event and vendor logistics. Since its inception in 2005, Trilogy Lacrosse has instructed over 8,500 student-athletes and coordinates approximately 30 camps per summer from coast to coast.

He graduated from Hofstra University in 2006 with a degree in marketing and additional studies in accounting, management and finance. Prior to his role with Trilogy Lacrosse, Orsen worked at a New York-based hedge fund.

“His selfless attitude, contagious excitement, and drive to be the best will allow him to be a great mentor for our student-athletes,” Amplo added. The most impressive thing about John was his desire to become a part of the Marquette community. It is most important to me to surround myself with individuals who believe in Marquette University and possess the character traits that will enable us to build a championship program. John fits those criteria perfectly.”
