High School Career

Brakes was a starter on Tony Rappold's 1988-89 squad, which went 22-4 and finished in the runner-up position in the Chicago Catholic League. Brakes led the team in rebounding that year and his teammates included two University of Illinois recruits. Brakes averaged 12.7 points and 8.5 rebounds as a junior, shooting 52% from the floor and 73.7% from the foul line.

As a senior, Brakes upped his production to 17.2 points per game, while averaging 7.5 rebounds. He shot 52.8% from the floor and 81% from the foul line.

Brakes is the son of Charles and Diana Brakes. His nicknames were “Chuck” and “Charley Tuna.” His favorite NBA player is Patrick Ewing and his favorite team is the Spurs. His ideal vacation spot is Paris and he enjoys eating steak, potatoes and chili. He enjoys playing pool, ping-pong, bowling and swimming. He feels his strengths as a player are his shooting and team play. He was a Broadcast & Electronic Communications major.
