He was captain of the Marquette Academy baseball team.

Shinners debuted for the New York Giants on April 12, 1922. He would see action in 56 games that season as the Giants would sweep the New York Yankees in the World Series. Shinners would play in 33 games in the next season; they would lose in the World Series to the Yankees.

During the 1924 season, he was not playing professional baseball.

In what would be his last season, Shinners suited up as a St. Louis Cardinal for the 1925 season. He played in 74 games as the Cardinals would finish 4th in the National League.
