AP Recap
MILWAUKEE (AP) Brian Wardle scored 26 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead Marquette to a 63-55 win over Coppin State Wednesday at the Milwaukee Arena.
Marquette (6-4) had a 52-18 advantage in rebounding _ 25-11 in the first half. However, Coppin State (2-10), after trailing by 13 at halftime, made a game of it despite shooting only 35 percent (17-for-48).
Marquette shot 33 percent (10-30) in the second half to finish at 37 percent (22-59) shooting for the game.
The Golden Eagles (6-4) made five 3-pointers, two by Wardle, in the first half while building a 32-19 lead. The half ended with back-to-back 3-pointers by Brian Barone and John Cliff.
Coppin State opened the second half with an 11-2 run to close within four before the Golden Eagles regrouped for a 46-34 lead.
It was 54-50 with 1:07 to play when Cliff hit a 3-pointer. Wardle added Marquette's final six points at the line.
John Mueller finished with 10 points for Marquette, which made 13 of 17 free throws.
Joe Brown scored 14 points, Rasheem Sims 12 and Kofi Pointer and Jorge Cajigas 10 apiece for Coppin State's Eagles. Sims scored all of his points in the final seven minutes.
