AAU Career

  • July 25, 2009 - AAU Super Showcase

“After a solid showing at the King City Classic, Jamail Jones didn't miss a beat coming to Orlando. The 6-foot-6 solidly built wing was a scoring dynamo for Hoop Planet. He had his outside shot working, and on top of that he used his strength at times down low. More often than not though, Jones just pulled up from behind the arc and it was pure almost every time he released it. In the first half alone Jones had 18 of his team's 23 points, and the scoring was much of the same in the second half.” Rivals.com article by Brian Snow

Analysis

July, 2009: Jones is a strong athlete that can knock down open shots. At 6-6 and 200 pounds Jones has great size for a wing. He hit three's off the catch and when he spots up in transition or spacing on the side of dribble penetration in the half court. Jones also has a nice floater that he likes to shoot going to his left. He has good concentration and touch as he hangs in the air. Jones is also a good ball handler and passer with the ability to draw and kick to the open man once he draws a second defender. He has good, not great, athletic ability and must work on his scoring moves off the dribble but he is aggressive, competes and usually finds a way to be productive.

June, 2009: Jones slashes his way to the basket with speed and a little bit of shake and bake. In transition, he sprints the lane then once he receives the ball in a scoring area he has a knack of getting to the rim and scoring. What's impressive about his drives is that when he gets in the paint he is under control. For someone whose strength lies in driving the ball, Jones is a surprisingly good shooter. This young man is a hard worker. His ability to score should certainly continue to develop as he works on his midrange game. With his excellent size and super athletic ability can be a very good defensive player. He has the ability to keep the point guards out of the lane as well as lock up shooting guards and small forwards. He does a good job of getting on the defensive boards and starting the fast break himself.
