John was named to the 2012-13 New Mexico Class 5A Boys 1st Team All-State Team for the second year in a row.

His high school team, 4th seeded Clovis, fell to 6th seeded Las Cruces, 61-49, in the Class 5A Boys State Title game. John struggled to score and eventually fouled out with two points on 1-of-8 shooting.

John committed to Marquette and signed on 9/26/2012.

He was offered by Creighton and Wyoming. Schools that expressed interest include Baylor, Fresno State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, and Texas Tech.
