Lackey transferred to Marquette from Casper Junior College, Wyoming and played at Marquette for two seasons (1970-71, 1971-72). As a captain for 1971-72 squad, he led the team in scoring with 15.2 points and also averaged 8.1 rebounds per game which earned him All-American status.
Lackey was drafted in both the 1972 NBA draft (5th round, 71st overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks) and the 1972 ABA draft (third round pick by the New York Nets). He chose to play with the ABA's Nets alongside his Marquette teammate, Jim Chones. He eventually suited up for only two seasons with the Nets, 1972-73 and 1973-74.
Lackey also played overseas in the Netherlands and France.
