As a 5'10” playmaker, Sauceda was a member of the Elgin High School 1943 and 1944 teams that finished fourth and second, respectively, in the Illinois State Basketball Tournament. In 1944 Sam was named to the Tournament, All-Conference and Northern Illinois All—Star teams. As a varsity halfback he made the Big Eight All—-Conference football team in 1943. He played four years on Marquette University’s varsity cage team. He was the team’s sixth man his freshman year and a starter his last three years. By the end of the 1950 season, Sam held that school’s record for playing in 96 consecutive games. Also that year, he was a member of the College All-Star team that played against the Harlem Globetrotters in the Chicago Stadium. In addition, he played varsity football at Marquette as a halfback. Sam is one of three athletes in Marquette’s history to earn varsity letters in football and basketball in his freshman year. He was a member and Chairman of Marquette’s Athletic Board from 1963-69 and Director of Athletics for Marquette University from 1969-74.

He was inducted into the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame on October 14, 1981.

Sauceda averaged 5.9 points per game during his senior campaign.

He received a B.A. degree from Marquette in 1950, and M.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1952, and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Madrid in Spain in 1960. Also, Sauceda became a member of the Marquette faculty in 1954 and served as an assistant professor of modern languages and a chairman of the university's athletic board.

On January 1, 1970, he became Marquette University's Athletic Director.
