Taylor was a three-time all-state selection at Denison High School, where he finished as the all-time leading scorer with 2,630 points. He averaged 20.7 points, 7.4 rebounds and 4.4 assists as a senior, and was named MVP of the 2010 Texas High School Coaches All-Star Game.
Taylor was ranked No. 78 nationally by ESPN and the No. 16 point guard overall in the Class of 2010.
He was highly recruited by Texas, Marquette, Arizona St., Texas A&M, and Kansas before landing at Oklahoma.
On December 15, 2010, Oklahoma announced Taylor would be leaving the program due to personal reasons. “T.J. is dealing with some things personal in nature and he informed me today that he is leaving our program,” said head coach Jeff Capel. “We wish circumstances were such that T.J. could remain with us, but we are certainly sensitive to his situation. We wish him the best.”
Said Taylor, “This is something I felt I needed to do at this time of my life. I love Coach Capel and the staff at OU, and I wish everyone on the team the best of luck.”
On May 2, 2011, Marquette announced that Taylor would be transfering into the program for the 2012-2013 season.
