VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) – Dominic James hit a 3-pointer with 3 seconds left and scored the final 18 points for No. 8 Marquette in a 65-62 win over Valparaiso on Monday night.

James made a 3-pointer with 37 seconds left that gave Marquette (7-0) a 62-59 lead. But Jarryd Loyd answered with a 3 over James with 21 seconds left to tie the game. James then hit the game-winner from the top of the key to finish with 22 points.

Valparaiso had one last chance, but a 35-footer at the buzzer from Brandon McPherson bounced off the left side of the rim.

Valparaiso (3-2) has lost 17 straight games to ranked teams since making it to the round of 16 in the 1998 NCAA tournament.

Wesley Matthews added 11 points and Jerel McNeal had 10 for Marquette.

Shawn Huff, who was 3 of 4 from 3-point range in the second half, led Valparaiso with 22 and Lloyd added 11 as Valparaiso, which shot 33.3 percent in the first half, shot 61 percent in the second half to nearly pull of the biggest upset since Bryce Drew hit a 3-pointer as time expired to give Valparaiso a 70-69 upset over Mississippi in the first round of the NCAA tournament in 1998.

Valparaiso, which trailed by as many as 15 in the first half, used a 13-6 run before halftime to close to 31-24 at intermission. Marquette expanded the lead to 40-32 when Ousmane Barro scored inside five minutes into the second half. But the Crusaders answered with a a 12-0 run, taking a 44-40 lead when Loyd scored on a fastbreak layup following a turnover by James.

Neither team led by more than five points the rest of the way.

Marquette outscored Valparaiso 26-16, but the Crusaders were 8 of 10 from 3-point range in the second half. Valpo's reserves outscored Marquette's bench 16-12.

Valparaiso, will get two more shots this week to end its losing streak to ranked teams. It hosts No. 19 Butler on Wednesday then travels to play at No. 4 Ohio State on Saturday.
