Analysis

ESPN Evaluations

November, 2008: Baird is a versatile player who consistently showed the skills to be effective at the next level. Only a junior, he showed maturity in leading his team to the tournament championship (2008 McDonald's Texas Invitational). At the moment, he is a face up 4-man who has the ability to stretch the defense with his shooting skill. He is not going to create a lot for himself off the dribble, but knows how to use his shot fake to create space for himself. As he develops athletically he should blossom into a very capable 3 man at the collegiate level. Very sound fundamentally on both sides of the ball, he has good vision and sees the next play before it happens. Tough kid that battles for rebounds and is willing to fight for position in the low post.

July, 2008: Steve is a skilled high post forward. He would much rather be listed as a 3 man. He is a good shooter. He avoids the paint as if it contained an infectious disease. He could play the 3 in the right system. He is a Steve Novak clone but is not quite that good a shooter yet. He struggles with his perimeter defense on the wing (that is why I think he is a 4). He is a decent athlete. If he becomes more aggressive and realizes he is best suited as a mismatch 4 man his stock will rise quickly.

December, 2007: Steven Baird has great size, strength and skill for a 2010 prospect. He is skilled enough to play out on the perimeter, but must work on being able to guard perimeter players. He has a god jump shot and is very active on the glass. Baird is already very physically mature for his class and needs to work on becoming a better athlete as well as improving his game. He is effective inside and out, but will really need to work on his perimeter skills to remain a high-major prospect because he appears to be done growing.
