In his ten seasons in the NFL (all with the Minnesota Vikings),he was primarily a defensive back, but also served as a punt returner.

Kassulke was an All-Pro selection in 1969 and a Pro-Bowl selection in 1970.

Along with the infamous “Purple People Eaters” defensive line, he would help lead the Minnesota Vikings during the 1969 season to Super Bowl IV against the Kansas City Chiefs. Due to their giving up three interceptions, three fumbles, and and six turnovers, the Vikings lost 23-7 causing Kassulke to comment: “We made more mental mistakes in one game than we did in one season.”

Tragically in 1973, on his way to training camp, Kassulke was involved in a motorcycle accident which left him paralyzed from the waist down thus ending his career.
