Between 1917 and 1954, Marquette was nicknamed the “Hilltoppers” because of its original location on a hill between North 10th and State streets.

However between 1924 and 1937, Marquette used the nickname “Golden Avalanche” for its football team, while all other teams were referred to as “Hilltoppers.”
