Analysis

ESPN Evaluations:

April, 2009: Desrosiers has a very diverse, mature offensive skill-set, which makes him tough for opposing big guys to guard, especially when they will not leave the paint to guard Desrosiers. He has the ability to connect on jumpers with range that extends out to the 3-point line. Desrosiers will also give defenders a head fake, take one or two dribbles, then pull up for s mid-range jump shot. He could make a living as a pick-and-pop big man or as a trailer on the break for jumpers. Desrosiers has a European big man style of play and when his passing ability is combined with his outside shooting prowess, Desrosiers can easily play the high spot in high-low offensive alignments, especially if paired with an athletic, paint-oriented big man. In the paint, he has good footwork and will connect on turnaround jumpers, but he fades away a great deal in efforts to avoid contact and does not look to use his size as much as he should. Desrosiers also needs to finish with contact in the paint at a more successful rate. On the defensive, Desrosiers would benefit from playing with a defensive-minded, rebounding, athletic, shot-blocker that would allow Desrosiers to roam. Despite his great size and good lower half, Desrosiers shies away from contact and does not rebound as well as he should or anchor his team's defensive efforts. He plays a little too straight up and can get exploited in pick-and-roll situations and when he has to come out and guard on the perimeter. In addition to improving his defensive focus, Desrosiers has to increase his intensity and effort on the floor.

January, 2009: Desrosiers has a very diversified skill set which allows him to operate effectively from almost anywhere on the floor. He has the ability to connect on jumpers with range that extends out to the 3-point line. Desrosiers can also score the ball from the paint, though he has to become significantly stronger to establish and hold position on the low block. He has good footwork on the low block when he gets the ball and looks comfortable executing those moves. When he gets the ball on the low block, he has a propensity to fade on jumpers, even when he has a considerable height advantage over his defender. Increasing his strength will help to resolve this issue. However, when he gets a chance to show it, his turnaround jumper is lethal. He also needs to become more aggressive in his approach on the court, especially given his plethora of offensive tools. He has a tendency to disappear at times, especially when his team needs him to step up. Desrosiers has a very good feel for the game and passes the ball very despite his height. He also needs to increase his intensity and effort on the defense end.

September, 2008: Desrosiers has very good skills at this point, but he also has a ton of untapped potential. Although he does not have a muscular, chiseled frame, he has rather wide shoulders and developed legs, which signals that he has the potential to develop into a monster. At this point, Desrosiers relies on finesse and skill for effectiveness. He has very solid footwork and post moves, which makes him a good back-to-the-basket post player, though he prefers to play in the midpost or away from the basket on the perimeter, where he can get off his jumper that he shoots out to 3-point territory. On the block, Desrosiers has a deadly turn-around jumper. A right-hand dominant player, he has the ability to use counter moves in the post and finish with his left hand around the rim. He runs the floor very well and can also pass out of double-teams when he encounters them in the post. With added strength, Desrosiers will have the tools needed to hold his position in the post, which will make him a better rebounder, post defender and scorer in the paint.

April, 2008: The young center has the potential to evolve into a dominant defensive player. He is already a very effective shot blocker who is equally effective when guarding the ball or rotating from the weak side of the floor. He can be overpowered from time to time because he is very lean physically. However, he has excellent agility, lateral quickness, and timing, which should enable him to eventually become an elite level shot blocker once he is able to fill out his frame. Offensively, Carson is very limited. Although he runs the floor well and shows a nice touch when facing the basket from 18 feet and in, he isn't as much of a threat inside the paint as a player his size should be as he lacks a go to move with his back to the basket as well as the physical strength to finish consistently against contact.
