Hayward Finds Touch In Time To Save Marquette

Cincinnati — Lazar Hayward found his shooting stroke, and just in the nick of time for the Marquette Golden Eagles.

He shrugged off a 1-for-11 start to knock down a three-pointer with 27.5 seconds remaining that ultimately sent the game into overtime, then scored five more points in the extra session as MU outlasted the Cincinnati Bearcats, 79-76, on Sunday at Fifth Third Arena.

It was the sixth victory in the last seven outings for the Golden Eagles (17-9, 8-6 Big East), who won despite surrendering what could have been a game-clinching 21-2 run over the final 7 minutes 45 seconds of the first half to a Bearcats team playing for its postseason life.

Fellow seniors David Cubillan and Maurice Acker also came up with some crucial plays late, but without Hayward's long bomb knotting things up, MU likely would have kicked off its crucial three-games-in-eight-days trip with its 10th loss.

“I want the ball in (Hayward's) hands because I have complete trust in him, and our team has complete trust in him,” said coach Buzz Williams, sporting a freshly shaved head for the first time in nearly a month. “Lazar's been a constant.”

Jimmy Butler and Darius Johnson-Odom scored 20 points apiece to tie for the game high, while Hayward finished with 13 points on 4-for-13 shooting and 11 rebounds as the Golden Eagles overcame a second straight uneven performance with 11 three-pointers and a 16-for-17 day at the free-throw line (season-best 94.1%).

Joe Fulce also turned in a career performance, tying his high with 13 points to go with five rebounds in 15 energetic minutes off the bench.

That MU was even in a position to send the game into overtime was a testament to its fortitude.

After outscoring Cincinnati (15-11, 6-8), 17-0, to take a 31-18 lead with 7:46 left in the first half, the Golden Eagles completely collapsed, allowing the Bearcats to close on a 21-2 run during which they hit 9 of 10 shots, held MU without a basket of its own and energized a previously dead crowd of 10,192 en route to a 39-33 halftime lead.

“They just kept coming, kept coming,” Hayward said. “They did a great job of adjusting to little things that we were doing, getting open layups and threes. Credit goes to them, but we stopped looking for each other a little bit.”

Cincinnati stretched its lead to 46-38 - extending its success from the field to 12 for 13 - before MU finally dug in and began its comeback.

A quick 7-0 run got the Golden Eagles within 46-45 at the 15:35 mark, and after failing to capitalize on five chances to regain the lead finally did on an Acker three from the left wing that made it 57-56 with 9:40 remaining.

The lead exchanged hands three times over the next 4½ minutes, with Cubillan hitting a three to pull MU even at 64-64 before a Larry Davis put-back put Cincinnati in front, 66-64, with 1:15 left.

The Golden Eagles weren't able to cash in on their ensuing possession and fouled Bearcats big man Ibrahima Thomas with 43.0 seconds remaining. Following the example set by his teammates - Cincinnati finished the day 8 for 16 from the line - Thomas made the first and missed the second to give Cincinnati a 67-64 lead.

Hayward rebounded and MU got the ball up-court, looking for a good shot. Acker found Hayward deep on the left wing. He used a hard pump-fake to get defender Rashad Bishop to sail past him, then calmly set his feet and drained the shot to make it 67-67 with 27.5 seconds left.

Cincinnati got a shot off at the other end, but Bishop's three came up short.

“At that moment in time I wasn't thinking about anything but trying to make that shot,” said a smiling Hayward, who tied Jerel McNeal for MU's all-time games played mark with 130.

“I was just like, 'Man, I'm just glad it went in.'”

Hayward picked up in overtime where he left off in regulation, hitting a layup off the tip to open the scoring; canning a three a little more than 2 minutes later to put MU up, 73-70; and throwing a perfect baseball pass on an inbounds play to Butler, who slammed it home for a 77-73 lead with 15.6 seconds left.

A Bishop three with 7.9 seconds left got the Bearcats within 77-76, and Cincinnati fouled Acker on the inbounds. Acker calmly drained both free throws, and Deonta Vaughn missed a long three as time expired.

“It's a big week for us,” Hayward said, referring to the Golden Eagles' upcoming games at St. John's and Seton Hall. “Coming in here, getting a road win against a good home team to start our little road streak, it's definitely a good feeling.”
