NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — After his team lost two straight games and dropped out of The Associated Press Top 25 for the first time all season, Marquette coach Tom Crean knew his team was facing a must-win situation when they visited Seton Hall on Monday night. “I never let the kids know it, but it's the reason why I hid in my room all day today,” Crean said after his Golden Eagles trounced the Pirates 89-64. “This was huge. My stomach said that all day long. But the kids were always upbeat and positive.” Lazar Hayward scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds, pacing a balanced attack that carried Marquette (17-6, 7-5 Big East Conference) to the easy victory. Jerel McNeal and Wesley Matthews each added 14 points.

Jeremy Hazell had 18 points to pace the Pirates (15-10, 5-7), who lost their fourth straight game. Brian Laing finished with 17 and Eugene Harvey added 14.

Marquette took command early on, going on a 15-0 run over an almost seven-minute span of the first half to take a 21-4 lead. Hayward had two rebound baskets during that stretch, and Ousmane Barro also scored twice during the run.

“We got off to a great start and that was a key,” Crean said. “We tried to take away their running game and we did that. We also wanted to win the rebounding game and we did that. We took good shots and controlled the action.”

The Golden Eagles led 40-22 at the break, then pulled away in the second half, leading by as many as 28 points.

Seton Hall's Jamar Nutter was ejected from the game with about 12 minutes remaining for throwing a flagrant elbow to the throat of Marquette's Dominic James.

Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez, who didn't address the media until nearly an hour after the game, had little to say about the loss.

“We got beat by a better team,” he said. “Marquette's really good and I knew they would come in a little desperate. We got outclassed tonight.”

The game was in sharp contrast to the teams' previous meeting this season, when Marquette held on for a 61-56 win last month.

“We didn't play with great spirit that night, but they did,” Crean said. “We knew that we could play a lot better than the first time. We worked extremely hard this time. They took it to us a little the first time, but we played confident today.”
