  • Smith was the Lakers' second round selection (24th pick, 51st overall) in the 1990 NBA Draft. He was the fourth to the last player drafted.
  • In his rookie season, Smith came off the bench to relieve Magic Johnson at point guard.
  • His first start was in place of an injured Magic Johnson on March 22, 1991. He recorded two points and two assists in 13 minutes.
  • He ranked 2nd (min. 1600 minutes) in the NBA in ratio of offensive to defensive rebounds (1.191)
  • His first double-double came in a 106-84 Lakers' win over the Bucks in Milwaukee: 25 points and 10 rebounds (March 3, 1994).
  • Smith scored a career playoff-high 15 points along and grabbed 2 rebounds in Game 4 of the 1992-93 NBA Playoffs against the Phoenix Suns.
  • On January 13, 1997, Smith hit the only FG by either team (19 attempts) in the lowest-scoring overtime in NBA history as his Charlotte Hornets defeated the Denver Nuggets, 102 - 100. Said Smith, “Game-winning shots are always good.”

Comments on His NBA Game

  • “A tremendous pure athlete, Smith is a great leaper…The former Marquette sensation's best asset may be his defense, as he is quick enough to guard most point men and strong enough to take on the majority of the shooting guards in the league.” (1992)
  • “Strong 2-guard…good defender with erratic offensive game…can drive to the hoop, but has trouble making scoring passes in traffic…strong at the offensive board…must improve perimeter shooting and ballhandling to get more playing time.” (1995)
